South East Portland is near and dear to my heart because I have lived here since 2000, and I love it. The key neighborhoods in “close in” SE are Hosford/Abernathy, Hawthorne, Buckman, Mt. Tabor, and Richmond. Mt. Tabor is a massive city park, the only one in the US that includes a real live active volcano (no fooling)! The Hawthorne neighborhood has a vibrant commercial corridor with restaurants movie theatres shops and grocery options. Both Hawthorne and Belmont Street have kind of a funky “San Francisco” kind of feel.
Further south of Powell are the neighborhoods of East Moreland, and Sellwood which have a feel of their own. There is a great public golf course in East Moreland. This is also where Reed College is located. Some up and coming neighborhoods in the South East are the Foster/Powell and Woodstock. There are amazing values in these neighborhoods in particular.
You will mainly find homes built in the 1920’s through the 1960’s up and down the east side. Many have been remodeled and upgraded, but retain lots of charm from those eras.
